Kumar Jawa
Kumar Jawa is well known in the Indian community. He is the founder of India Sweets & Spices, which has been serving the needs of Southern California for 20 years now. Kumar Jawa began the path to his career at a very young age by helping his father, Jiwan Dass, in the family produce business in India. The two shared a dream that one day he would expand his family business and open a store in America. When the opportunity presented itself, Kumar came to America in 1982.
The Stores
Kumar Jawa worked extremely hard, saved his money, and in 1984, was able to open the first India Sweets & Spices in Culver City. The Indian population in America steadily grew and along with it increased the demand for goods and food from the native country, not only with Indians but with Americans too. Kumar's customers requested that he open a second store in the San Fernando Valley, and in response, he founded the Canoga Park location in 1990. The growth continued and so did the demand for more locations. Kumar founded more locations from Fresno to San Diego. His latest store, in Glendale, was built in 2003 and this is the only store he is personally running at this time. In total there are currently 8 India Sweets & Spices locations all around Southern California and Kumar is hoping to continue growth to the Thousand Oaks area.
All locations are listed with address and phone numbers on the Other Locations page.
The Family and Community Involvement
In 1984, Kumar married his wife of 20+ years, Debbie. Together they had two wonderful kids Raj (19) and Nisha (11), both of who can sometimes be seen working at the Glendale store. Kumar Jawa has always supported the Indian community, especially with cultural events that allow the glorious Indian heritage to be shared with everyone. He is currently serving as president in the India Association of Los Angeles, which organizes events like the Indian Independence Day Celebration.
Goal
Kumar Jawa's only goal has and always will be to continue to serve the needs of the community with convenience, excellent service, and quality merchandise to his customers.
