How Indian Culture Has Inspired Home Decor
Since the beginning of American colonization the Indian influence has been present in homes. The early American settlers did not know how to grow cotton and purchased the product from India. The pieces were used for lady-s fashions and many other uses in the home. In the late 19th century, Lockwood de Forest developed a combination of arts and crafts, for home construction, and called the style “Indianate’ houses. In the mid to late 1930s, the stylings of Art Deco became popular and much of the furnishings and fabrics were of Indian origin.
As the 1960s hit their heights in music and fashion, the Indian fabrics and clothing styles gained a renewed interest. From this interest stemmed a fad for all-things Indian and the Pier 1 Import stores began to appear across the nation. For the first time in American history, everyone could purchase the finely-detailed cabinets, sofas, and fabrics from the Indian market. More than just a passing fancy, the style would last adding color to rooms and bold fabrics to the living areas of American homes.
Since that time we-ve seen the ornate pieces, some hand-carved, enter the market and decorate the occasional home; however, with the younger generations craving for more color and detail it-s making a resurgent effort in dcor. Layers of rich deep-colored fabrics are utilized as drapes and canopies. The finer and darker woods are being used for living room furnishings, and the deeper richer colors are adorning walls.
The craftsmanship of the Indian furniture has made it a success with those that appreciate artistic endeavors and love of unique pieces that set their homes apart from the rest. A piece of furniture that bears the tag “Hand Made in India’ is well-worth the purchase price. The Indian culture is rooted in perfection, and their products are proof of their dedication.
